Small French Louis XVI Table, Jacques Birckle

This small wheeled square ‘table de salon’ has three drawers and a shelf. All sides of the table are embellished with floral marquetry. The marble top is edged with an ormolu gallery.
This table was intended to be placed next to an armchair, somewhere in the middle of a room, hence the fine finish on all sides.
Jacques Birckle (1734-1801) became master carpenter on juli 30. 1764. He had a workshop on the rue de Charenton and later on the rue de Saint-Nicolas. Between 1785 and 1789 he was commissioned to make furniture for the Chateau Saint Cloud by Marie-Antoinette and by Madame Elisabeth of Montreuil. He also received commissions from the duke of Orleans and the Princesse de Lamballe.
His furniture is of very high quality. It is obviously made by a master that is committed to achieve maximum decorative effects, and only sparingly uses bronze fittings. He shows a preference for marquetry with high contrast and a lack of superfluous detail. The floral designs are often, as in this case, surrounded by Greek ornaments.
