Description

Two Kangxi teapots on stands with a decoration of flowers and butterflies. With the original famille noir technique green enamel was applied to an opaque black glaze. This technique was problematic and prone to failure. For that reason Chinese porcelain painters at the beginning of the eighteenth century turned to a technique that was easier and yielded less failures. The Dutch call this technique ‘litmus’; after the famille rose decoration has been applied to the opaque black-green enamel, the porcelain is baked in a kiln.
