Description
A polychrome decorated delftware terrine in the shape of a duck. The inside and the inside of the lid are marked with the number 6.
The duck is marked VH for Hendrick van Hoorn, the last owner of pottery ‘de Drie vergulde Astonnekens’ of Delft. This is remarkable, because two similar ducks known to exist are unmarked. These ducks, in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin and in a private collection, were at the occasion of the exhibition ‘Rococo in Nederland’ attributed to the factory of Ary Blankers from the Overtoom in Amsterdam, due to the uncommon bright colours and the shade of black used here. Ducks in this shape and colour were up to that moment (and thereafter as can be seen in the catalogue of Aronson Antiquairs of 2009) attributed to a Delft factory. The marks on this duck corroborate that vision.
