Description
These two Delftware rings are presumably made by de Metaale Pot when it was owned by Lambertus van Eenhoorn of his widow Margaretha Teckmann. The objects are unmarked. This is no surprise, where there is no place to unpretentiously mark them. The function of these artifacts is unclear. It is well possible that a copper bowl, filled with glowing embers, was placed in them by means of plate warmer. Another possibility is that they served to create a centerpiece. The ring would then serve as a base to stack several Delftware objects. Rings like these are extremely rare.
In 1701 elector Frederik crowned himself King of Prussia. To honor his newly acquired title he commissioned a very comprehensive table service from “De Grieksche A” under Pieter Adriaansz Kocks. All items were to be decorated with a black eagle. Peculiar items of this service were the wall sconces, of which two specimens are owned by Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and similar rings like these, of which the Kunst Gewerbe Museum in Berlin owns one copy.
