Description

The jar is decorated with eight panels in blue and white inspired on the Chinese Kangxi tradition. The decorations depict alternately vases with flowers and Chinese figures in landscapes. The panels are edged with rims of flowers. The shoulder is decorated with eight cartouches surrounded by flowering sprigs. The cartouches are alternately decorated with flowervases and landscapes. The flat lid is decorated on top with a landscape with figures. The side of the lid is divided in eight parts that are alternately decorated with landscapes and flowervases. The giltwood stand is more recent (ca. 1780) and has three legs that are decorated with meanders and acanthus. ‘De 3 Vergulde Astonne’ was a delftware manufacturer that was based on ‘de Lange Geer’ in Delft and was since 1667 jointly owned by Wouter van Eenhoorn and Pieter Gerritsz. Kam. The latter was probably the managing director of the firm. His son Gerrit part by part acquisitioned the firm and sold to his son Pieter Kam by 1700. Soon after, Gerrit Kam, together with his son David, obtained the Delftware manufacturer ‘De Paeuw’. The products from this firm were all halmarked ‘Paeuw’. All Delftware objects from around 1700 that are marked GK and PK are thought to have origined from ‘De 3 Vergulde Astonne’.
