Description
This Delftware plaque, or wall plate as they were described in 18th century inventories, is decorated with a rich bouquet in a vase. These types of plaques were very popular through the entire 18th century. They were not only manufactured in Delft but also in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. The decorators used prints of the French painter Jean Babtiste Monnoyer (1636-1699) for their inspiration. Monnoyer published several series of prints with bouquets as well as single flowers. The prints were very popular through the entire 18th century as models for the decoration of fired paintings. The designs of Monnoyer are also known from tile tableaus.
