Description

An elegant ‘secretaire à abattant’ on four slightly waved legs that end in fire-gilt bronze sabots. The front legs are placed diagonally and protrude slightly from the plane of the corners. The entire cabinet is finely veneered with flowers and trellis patterns in bois teinté, rosewood and boxwood. The lower compartment of the cabinet can be locked with two doors. The upper part closes with a fall-front writing tablet. The lower compartment is divided by a shelf and has a lockable section. The upper part is closed by the writing table. The inside is divided by a shelf and has several drawers that are veneered in a trellis pattern. The interior of the lower part contains a shelf and a locker with maquetry panels. This ‘French taste’ secretaire is, as always in The Netherlands, not signed. The unknown maker must have been renowned for his exceptionable marquetry of luxuriant flowers. Only one other piece of furniture of the same hand is known. Provenance: Röbbig, München. Private collection , Bremen.
