A Dutch Mahogany Louis XV Commode

A Dutch Mahogany Louis XV Commode

Sold

Offered by Van Nie Antiquairs

The moulded serpentine shaped «Bleu turquin» marble top above three bombé drawers between scrolling foliate angle mounts and a waved apron with C-scroll and rockwork mounts on cabriole legs with scrolled acanthus-cast sabots.

The shape of this commode totally corresponds with the ‘mode Française’ of the day in Dutch cabinetmaking in the 1760’s: curved front and sides on high curved legs and two drawers without a sepparating style. The top is covered with a slate of Rouge Royale marble. The legs are, both to embellish and to protect the corners, decorated with fittings and sabots of gilt bronze. The drawers are fitted with knobs and a scutcheon in gilt bronze. The curved shape of sides and front is enhanced by the reverse diamond veneer.
