Description

The chairs of of the common Dutch highbacked type with knobs on top. The chairs have S-volute shaped front legs that are connected two the back legs with crossing S-volute shaped supports. Where the legs cross we see a turned knob. The chairs are decorated with carved acanthus. The high backs of the chairs are decorated with turned balusters and decorations of acanthus. Around 1650 a new type of chair developed that was made by woodcarvers rather than cabinetmakers. Mostly tables are manufactured in this new way with voluted and carved legs, but here we see a set of chairs in the same manner. The abundant carved decoration has only two motives; volutes and acanthus, that are applied with great variation.
