Description
An oval table on tapered legs with an inlayed plaque of Pietra Dura with a representation of flowers, a butterfly and a bird. These small salon tables are typical of the 18th century. Empress Catherine the Great (1729-1796) was believed to use them as a writing table. But also in France this type of table was used to the same end. But they were also used to place candlesticks of clocks on them or to display favourite artefacts.
Judging by the design and the fine gilt bronze fittings, this table was undoubtetly inspired by the French style of the period.
