Description
A richly carved coffer (chest) with four pannels, a so called bridelchest. This piece was made in the Northern Netherlands, the Republic, the province of Holland. Both the front and the sides are carved.
A four panneled coffer (chest) decorated with beautiful carving. The coffer is made of quarter sawn oak with ebony details. It could have been used as a bridal gift. It's origin is the Province of Holland. The design and construction are clearly derived from the Dutch Renaissance fourdoor cupboards from the same period. The lid is flat and has a profiled rail at the underside which falls over the coffer. The styles are decorated with fluting. The carving is both floral and geometric. The back is constructed with horizontal planks the way it should be with this type of coffer. The front has two ball formed feet and at the back it stands on straight styles.
