Two elaborately decorated candelabra in gilt bronze and black and white marble. Goût Étrusque was the name given to a playful and imaginative classical style that followed on the Goût Grec during the Louis XVI style period. The 18th century excavations that revealed the Villa of Hadrian at Tivoli near Rome, disclosed a vast amount of elegant decorations that very soon were translated into contemporary decorative art. The Grotesque was a major part of this style: decorations playfully constructed round a vertical axis. Phantasy creatures, mythical animals and especially motives related to Bacchus, all decorated with garlands of Acanthus, all fight for attention in the Goût Étrusque.
