Description
Portrait of a girl with a dog in a garden
Bartholomeus van der Helst (1613 Haarlem - Amsterdam 1670) was a contemporary of Rembrandt. He soon became the most popular painter of portraits in Amsterdam for his flattering portrayals in the style of Anthony van Dyck being more immediately appealing than Rembrandt's dark and introspective later work. Some of Rembrandt's pupils adopted Van Helst's style instead of their master's.
Van der Helst was probably a pupil of Nicolaes Eliasz. Pickenoy. His earliest known piece dates from 1637 is a a group portrait of the regents of the Walloon Orphanage. Van der Helst is best known as a clever painter of portaits of the Amsterdam elite in elegant poses.
