Description
In the series of important painters of townscapes Johannes Christiaan Karel Klinkenberg (1852-1924) occupies a special place. "The recognition of Klinkenberg is due to the singular manner in which he introduced the sun into his paintings", wrote the Hague publicist Johan Gram in 1881. The harmonic interaction of light, shadow and nuances in colour softens the strong architectonic lines such that a very fascinating spectacle arises.
