Description
These 17th century Florentine cherubs were probably tabernacle ornaments that held candles or a drape. The statuettes are made in Florence in the vicinity of the workshop of Ferdinando Tacca (1619-1686), a famous Italian sculptor who is known to have manufactured a considerable number of bronze putti. The fashion for putti, nickname for little boys, revived in the Renaissance and was inspired on the Roman erotes, naked child-figures that accompanied the lovegod Eros. The Florentine sculptor Donatello (1368-1466) caused a survival that lasted through the 18th century. Thanks to the sculptor François Du Quesnoy (1597-1643) the putti were of influence throughout Western Europe.
The hair and the sash were originally gilded as the fashion of the period required.
