Description
This statuette is a bronze copy after the Roman marble statue from the first or second century AD that can be seen in the Museo Nazionale in Napels. This Flora is named after the Roman Farnese family that owned the statue in the 17th century. The sculpture is a Roman copy of a Greek statue of Aphrodite that was much revered for the magnificent way her dress was depicted. The statue was frequently copied in the 18th century, amongst others, by Roman artists like Francesco Righetti and Giovanni Zoffoli, as can be infered from their listings. Both Righetti and Zoffoli advertised the Flora in an attempt to sell them to foreign customers. Both sculptors demanded 18 sequins (a coin of 3,5 grams of gold) for a copy the size of three hands in height.
The base is inscribed with the words ‘Horatius Mourisius Romanus Hra sculpsit funditi’, that probably refer to the maker and founder. The exact meaning, however, needs further research.
