Description
A serpentine buste representing Michelangelo. This sculpture is made in Rome around 1800.
It is a characteristic portrait of the sculptor, with his disfigured nose. The artist is believed to have broken his nose as a teenager, when he engaged into a fight with his fellow student Torrigiani. Torrigiani was fed up with the continuous criticism of Michelangelo on his peers, but was also envious of his extraordinary talents. After the fight Torrigiani fled in fear of repercussions by Michelangelo’s patron Lorenzo de Medici.
Many books and theories have been dedicated to Michelangelo’s disfigured nose and the psychological impact it had on the artist.
