Description
This small statuette of a Faun in coral is made in Trapani in the south of Sicily. This port is situated near a large coral reef. In 1628 a guild of coral craftsmen was established. In the 17th and 18th century a lucrative trade in carved coral, sometimes combined with silverware, developed. The artifacts were exhibited throughout Europe and found their way to many collectioners.
