original estofado polychromy on oak
Depicting from left to right, a stone mason, an architect, a sculptor and a carpenter, the quattro Coronati, patron saints of builders and masons. This relief possibly was part of an altar that was commissioned by a builders-guild, or placed in a guild’s house. The style of carving and frame, together with the use of the ‘estofado’ technique point to the Spanish peninsula as area of origin. The fact that the men all are wearing boots instead of shoes further supports this assumption. The ‘estofado’ technique can be described as a parcel gilt surface being painted. After this that paint is partly scratched away often in patterns to create an illuminating effect.
