Description
A very large oval shaped cooler on a profiled stand. On either side a large handle. The middle part is decorated with protuberances. Wine coolers of this robust size were manufactured during the entire 17th century, and were used, then and also in later periods, to cool drinks at feasts and celebrations. They were made of marble, chased copper or occasionally silver. They were placed in the dining area near the buffet. These large coolers are to be seen on pictures of gardenparties. In particular on depictions of receptions of Louis XIV at Versailles we see prominent representations of these large coolers. Dutch painters like Jan Miense Molenaar and Dirk Hals made paintings that represent large open air feasts where large coolers appear.
