- A Large Number of Prestigious International Galleries Announced at 2011 Edition of FIAC
PARIS - FIAC 2011 will bring together 1681 galleries of modern and contemporary art, coming from 21 countries.
France will be represented by 53 galleries, accounting for 33% of exhibitors, followed by the United States with 27 galleries, Germany with 21 galleries, Italy with 13 galleries, Belgium with 11 galleries, the United Kingdom with 9 galleries and Switzerland with 9 galleries. 73% of participating galleries are European. Brazil, Turkey and South Africa are represented by participating galleries for the first time this year. 37 galleries are newcomers to FIAC or are returning to the event after an absence.
GENERAL SECTOR – MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS
Nave and Upper-‐level Galleries The General Sector of FIAC 2011 presents 158 galleries, 33 of which are either exhibiting for the first time or marking their return to FIAC in 2011. The 38th edition is especially notable for the participation of an exceptional number of prestigious international galleries, including: 303 Gallery, Blum & Poe, Cheim & Read, Galerie Chantal Crousel, Massimo De Carlo, Gagosian Gallery, Gladstone Gallery, Galería Elvira González, Marian Goodman Gallery, Galerie Karsten Grève, Hauser & Wirth, Galerie Max Hetzler, Xavier Hufkens, Klosterfelde, Kurimanzutto, Yvon Lambert, Galerie Lelong, Lisson Gallery, Luhring Augustine, Maccarone, Matthew Marks Gallery, Galerie Kamel Mennour, Metro Pictures, Galleria Massimo Minini, Victoria Miro, Galerie Perrotin, Friedrich Petzel Gallery, Galerie Eva Presenhüber, Almine Rech Gallery, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Sadie Coles HQ, Esther Schipper, Sprüth Magers, Galeria Luisa Strina, Michael Werner Gallery, White Cube and David Zwirner, to name just a few. Exhibitors also include a number of galleries specialising in modern art, such as: Galerie 1900-‐2000, Galerie Gmurzynska, Kicken, Ubu, Galerie Natalie Seroussi, The Pace Gallery and Applicat-‐Prazan.
The list of galleries returning to FIAC in 2011 includes: 303 Gallery, Bortolami Gallery, Cabinet, Galerie Guido W. Baudach, Lisson Gallery, Magazzino d’Arte Moderna, Galerie Polaris, Sadie Coles HQ, The Approach and White Cube. FIAC 2011’s first-‐time exhibitors are: Andrew Kreps Gallery, Cherry and Martin, Eleven Rivington, Friedrich Petzel Gallery, Galerist, Galerie Gmurzynska, Marian Goodman Gallery, Kicken, Luciana Brito Galeria, Galeria Luisa Strina, Maccarone, Marc Foxx, Galleria Massimo Minini, Matthew Marks Gallery, MD72, Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle, Sutton Lane, Taxter & Spengemann, The Pace Gallery, Galeria Vermelho and Galerie VidalCuglietta. In addition, this year’s event features the presentation by Kewenig of exceptional works by James Lee Byars, a singular series of vintage photographs by Diane Arbus exhibited by Thomas Zander, pieces by Kelley Walker presented by Catherine Bastide, Klosterfelde’s presentation of an installation by John Bock, works by Khaled Jarrar and Yto Barrada exhibited by Polaris, pieces by Robert Heinecken presented by Cherry and Martin, Frank Elbaz’s presentation of a series of works by Bernard Piffaretti as well as a monumental work by Pablo Bronstein, exhibited by Franco Noero.
LAFAYETTE SECTOR AND LAFAYETTE PRIZE – EMERGING ARTISTS
Upper-‐level Galleries In the wake of FIAC’s highly successful collaboration with its official partner Groupe Galeries Lafayette in 2009 and 2010, the French retailer has renewed its support for galleries specialising in emerging art chosen as exhibitors in the Lafayette Sector in 2011. This programme brings together 10 galleries selected for the quality of their prospective vision and on the basis of a specific project for FIAC 2011 involving the participation of one or two artists. These galleries are selected by a jury comprised of the following prominent figures: Ann Demeester (Director, De Appel Arts Centre, Amsterdam), Hans Ulrich Obrist (Co-‐director of Exhibitions and Programmes and Director of International Projects, Serpentine Gallery, London), Beatrix Ruf (Director and Curator, Kunsthalle, Zürich), Marc-‐Olivier Wahler (Director, Palais de Tokyo,Paris) and Guillaume Houzé (Senior Vice President, Corporate Patronage, Groupe Galeries Lafayette, Paris).
This programme offers each selected gallery major financial assistance in support of its participation in FIAC 2011. An award ceremony to be held on Thursday, 20 October tops off the programme, with the announcement of the 2011 winner of the Lafayette Prize. This prize involves the acquisition of the winning work by Groupe Galeries Lafayette as well as the presentation of an exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in October 2012, together with a grant for a new project by the same artist. Carol Bove was the recipient of the Lafayette Prize for 2009, while Morag Keil, represented by Neue Alte Brücke (Frankfurt), won the prize in 2010. In autumn 2011, works by Keil will be exhibited at the Palais de Tokyo. This programme reflects the shared determination of FIAC and Groupe Galeries Lafayette to lend strong support to young artists on the international scene. For Galeries Lafayette, this commitment takes the shape of a global initiative to provide assistance addressing all facets of contemporary art production and dissemination, processes in which galleries play an essential role.

NEW YORK, NY - The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds the most important collection of paintings in America by the celebrated Dutch artist Frans Hals (1582/83-1666), whose portraits and genre scenes were famous in his lifetime for their immediacy and dazzling brushwork. Frans Hals in the Metropolitan Museum—on view from July 26, through October 10, 2011—presents 13 paintings by Hals, including two lent from private collections, and several works by other Netherlandish masters.

DORCHESTER - As the director of one of Switzerland’ leading luxury stores and a renowned collector himself, Hans Leu, alongside his broker, Mr. Lee of Hollywood Street, Hong Kong, were responsible for the export to the West of many oriental artefacts during the 1970’s and 1980’s. His close relationship with the Chinese government allowed him to act as an official conduit for antiques exported from the East and marketed for sale in the West. Of particular interest to Langhard were early Chinese antiquities from the Tang and Ming dynasties, many of which came to light during the numerous tomb excavations taking place at this time, notably the excavations in the early 1980’s of the burial site built by Zhu Yuan Zhang for his forbears between 1386 and 1413.
