In a remarkable coincidence, the ‘naturally divine’ Cumbrian view depicted in one of Turner’s paintings is up for sale at the same time as the masterpiece itself.
It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for any avid Turner collector to own both incarnations of a view that is as breathtaking in the flesh as it is on canvas.
Turner’s painting, which depicts the scene of the River Lune from the churchyard of St Mary’s Church in Kirkby Lonsdale, was held in high regard by the prominent critic and artist John Ruskin. He described it as a “priceless possession,” and it is now known by many as “Ruskin’s View”. Previously owned by Sir Donald Currie and last seen at auction in 1884, the painting is expected to reach up to £300,000. It will be sold as part of the 19th Century Paintings Sale at Bonham’s Auction House, New Bond St, London.
