Fernand Toussaint was born in 1873 in Brussels in a well-to-do, refined and cultural family. His talent was recognized and stimulated at a very young age. Being 15 years old he became an apprentice of Jean Portaels, an inventive and exacting teacher who considered drawing of the utmost importance. In 1891 he moved to Paris to complete his educaton. Toussaint specialised in women portraits. He had an aristocratic, refined taste and also excelled in flower paintings. Flowers and women are in the same sensual atmosphere. Especially roses, in full bloom, were his favourite flowers.
