Hendrik Valkenburg was born on September 8th, 1826 in Terwolde, a little village in the neighbourhood of Deventer. He died in Amsterdam, October 24, 1896. He had drawinglessons at the Art School in Deventer and later he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp (Belgium). For years he was an art teacher in Almelo and Zwolle. After he got a royal allowance he could completely devote himself to the art of painting, he moved to Amsterdam in 1872. Hendrik Valkenburg was a painter of interiors, especially the life of the farmers in the east of Holland and around Utrecht. He also was a painter of fishermans life around Zandvoort. His works are to be found in the Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam and in several other museums in Holland.
