Van Strij, Abraham, 1753 - 1826
Abraham van Strij was born and died in Dordrecht, The Netherlands (Holland), 1753 - 1826. He received his first drawing lessons from his father, Leendert van Strij (1728 - 1798). Later on he was taught by Joris Ponse (1723 - 1783), painter of decorative pieces and still-lifes. Abraham van Strij probably continued with lessons at the Antwerp Academy. In 1774 he took part in the establishment of the "Dordtse Tekengenootschap Pictura". He devoted himself to this project the rest of his life. Van Strij started painting on paper-hangings and interior-panelling. After 1780 he made portraits and landscapes. Better known are his interior-scenes. For these interior-scenes he was inspired by 17th century masters like Pieter de Hoogh (1629 - 1684). Abraham van Strij also was a teacher to a large group of students.
