Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen lived and worked in The Hague. He mostly painted landscapes with cattle and figures. He also made etchings and lithographes. Travelling to Belgium and Germany he perfected his art by observing nature extensively. H. van de Sande Bakhuyzen had exhibitions in all the important miseums of the Netherlands. He received several awards. The became an honourable member of the Amsterdam Academy and was the manager of the Tekenschool (Art School) in The Hague. Van de Sande Bakhuyzen is considered to be the foremost Dutch painer of landscapes in the 19th century.
