Constant Permeke, born in Antwerp (Belgium) in 1886. He died in Ostend in 1952. Son of painter Hendrik Lodewijk Permeke. Pupil of the Academy of Art in Brugge and Gent. He was taught by, a.o., J. Delvin. Painter of landscapes, marines and domestic scenes. At first his style was impressionistic, later he became the initiator of Flemish expressionism: the "Latemse School". Constant Permeke lived in Great Britain during the First World War. The last years of his life he spent in Jabbeke -close to Ostend- where his large house with ateliers is now the Provincial Museum Constant Permeke. His work is to be found in several public collections and museums, a.o. in Brussels, Antwerp, Amsterdam and of course in the Constant Permeke Museum.
