Bernd and Hilla Becher –a German artist couple- are one of the most influential artists of our time. For more than forty years they have been recording the heritage of an industrial past: images of industrial buildings of winding towers and cooling towers, of silos, lime kilns and blast furnaces, coal bunkers and gravel plants. Their systematic photography of functionalist architecture brought them recognition as conceptual artists as well as photographers. Generations of documentary photographers and artists are influenced by the founders of the ‘Becher school’ in Düsseldorf, Germany. Former students included Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff and Candida Höfer.
