Jacob Maris was born in 1837 in The Hague and died in Karlsbad (Germany) in 1899. Brother of Mathijs and Willem, pupil of, amongst others, the Academy of Expressive Art in The Hague and the Antwerp Academy. In the years 1859 - 1860 he travelled through Germany, Switzerland and France. In 1865 he went for a longer period to Paris, but in 1871 he returned again to The Hague. At first he got influenced by the so-called Romantic School and later by the Barbizon School, a source of inspiration for the The Hague School. Initially Maris painted in a so-called "smooth" manner, but he developped his talent and then painted landscapes and town-views in the, for the The Hague School, typical gray tones. Maris also made etchings, watercolours and lithographs. He taught his brother William. Works in numerous museums.
