Wilhelmus Henricus Petrus Johannes van Stade, (The Hague May 16, 1862 to December 11, 1931) better known as William the Black is a Dutch artist, etcher, watercolorist and illustrator. He belonged to the Hague School. The Black lived and worked until 1894 in The Hague and in Amsterdam from 1900-1905. The work of Willem de Zwart presents a wide range of subjects: landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes and portraits, rendered in a naturalistic-impressionistic style. He fell to within the Hague School by his exuberant use of color. His work shows an affinity with the city focused on people and Amsterdam Impressionism.
