Educated in Teheran and Antwerp, two cultural and artistic extremes, Najd’s painterly practice shows a dialectic approach in both form and content. Leaving the traditional and conflict-laden context of the Middle East for Western ‘freedom,’ Najd develops a language merging both worlds in a critical yet respectful discourse. Combining her perception of reality and the media produced ‘reality’, she researches the anecdotal strength of the image and its message, while juxtaposing it with the idea of painting exemplifying freedom of thought.

Maryam Najd lives and works in Antwerp & Berlin. She is currently a resident at ISCP, New York. In 2011 she will have a residency at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien. Groupshows include: Common Ground, Second Home, (Berlin), See who’s coming, MK gallery (Rotterdam), Fading, The Museum of Elsene, (Brussels), The Choice of Jan Fabre, Indian Caps, (Antwerp), The Aerials of sublime transcape, Lokaal 01, (Breda), Metamorphosis II, Museum (San Gimignano).
