Since October 2010 Florian van Roekel has joined Flatland Gallery. Van Roekel graduated cum laude in 2010 at The Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague, after acquiring his Ba at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam in 2006.

Exhibitions include Fotoprijs 09|10 at the Dutch Photomuseum, Rotterdam, a groupshow at Gallery Heden in The Hague and in January 2011 at the Kominek Gallery in Berlin. Earlier exhibitions include Selection of Graduates, Amsterdam Centre of Photography, Best of Graduates, Ron Mandos Gallery, Amsterdam and Graduation Exhibition, Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague.

Florian van Roekel presents us with images with which we are familiar and everyday settings such as offices, factories, housing estates and in the woods. Nondescript locations where nothing out of the ordinary is taking place. Once photographed the image of this visual reality transforms miraculously and simultaneously into something which did not exist previously. Something which moves us profoundly with our feelings of personal association. The most extraordinary thing is (that one gets the feeling) that the stories evoked by looking at his images of ordinary situations are exactly as Van Roekel anticipates. Try as one might, it is hard to interpret the image in any other way.
