Over the past 20 years, youngest winner ever of the ‘Prix de la Jeune Peinture Belge’ Damien De Lepeleire, has been building up a highly distinctive and challenging body of work. In his recent oeuvre the artist references European sculpture, African masks & Chinese art. Departing from photographic reproductions he appropriates styles, questioning the act of doing so on an art historical as well as socio-political level. As an ‘artist-conservator’ he carefully cuts out images from art & auction magazines and assembles them in his so-called ‘Museum of Pop-up Art’, questioning the status of the image.
