Gerard Portielje was born in Antwerp (Belgium) in 1856, he died in Remick (Luxembourg) in 1929. Pupil of the Artschool in Antwerp, directed by P. Beaufaux and J. van Lerius. Eldest brother of Edward Portielje (1861 - 1949). Traditional painter of anecdotic, homely scenes. The clever citizen and the brave nobleman of the past centrury had his attention. Some of his work reminds us of the work of the Belgian painter Jean-Baptiste Madou (1796 - 1877), they show the same particulars. Work in the Museum of Antwerp.
