Herman Gouwe belongs to the group of Dutch luministic painters. Het studied a the Amsterdam Artschool. He travelled for two years through Spain and Italy, returned in 1906 and settled down in Maastricht in the south of Holland. In 1910 he moved to Blaricum but returned every year to Maastricht to paint the landscape of Limburg with the spacious fields, the farmers and the horses. Around 1910 he met Jan Sluijters, Leo Gestel and Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig and the paintings by Herman Gouwe became pure sunlight and colour. His work was highly appreciated but Gouwe was not happy with his succes in Holland and in 1927 he left for Tahiti, he never returned to the Dutch art scene.
