Description

A Chinese doucai 'South Sea Bubble' plate

Decorated in green, yellow, iron-red, underglaze-blue and gilt with a central figure on a tiled floor below a beamed ceiling amidst an inscription in Dutch " Weg Gekke Actio-nisten ", the border with a band of leaves below the gilt rim. The decor refers to a disastrous speculation in shares of the East India Company in Europe at the beginning of the eighteenth century, where many lost their money.
