The Belgian painter Louis-Gustave Cambier studied at the academy of arts in Brussels, Belgium. He took part in the exhibition of the Circle Artistique in Brussels and the Société des Artistes Francais in Paris, France. At both exhibitions he received a lot of admiration and he was very successful. Cambier travelled extensively abroad. Around 1914 he settled at the French south coast. He befriended Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac. These friendships were of great importance for his artistic developement. He started painting with a light, impressionist touch and deverloped a liking for fierce colours. Between 1914 and 1924 he especially painted landscapes and village scenes. After 1924 he specialised in portraits. Louis Cambier also made sculptures.
