For Jungerman art becomes a vehicle for considering what means to be a global citizen, someone believing in the potential of art to raise social consciousness and inspire cultural awareness. Remy Jungerman’s altar pieces are inspired by the work Guardian, a monumental wall installation Jungerman presented at the Xth Havana Biennial last month. The works are based on a modernist grid that incorporates imagery and three dimensional attributes inspired by Afro Suriname religious Winti rituals, which also form the cultural background of the artist Remy Jungerman. The works are personal reflections referring to tradition as a social activity and safety net far from any form of religious dogma. Tradition as a concept has been instrumentalized by religious institutions who seem no longer able to offer enough room for spirituality. Jungerman’s work shows how the artist breaks and opens the rigid grid to create his personal mental space within that structure.
