Dutch photographer Marie Cecile Thijs (December 27, 1964, Heerlen, The Netherlands) specializes in portraiture. In her photographs she strives for intensity and illusion. She mingles contemporary style with classical aesthetics.
Marie Cecile Thijs initially had a career as a lawyer, but more than fifteen years ago she rediscovered her earlier love for the camera, and decided to become a photographer. Since then, she has achieved recognition for her photoseries 'Human Angels' and 'Legal Practitioners'. She is also known for her portraits of many politicians, artists and writers.
Her photography is regularly published and acquired by art collectors and corporations, and she exhibits frequently in Amsterdam and throughout Europe. In the Netherlands, her work is represented by Eduard Planting Fine Art Photographs, and she is alligned with photo agency Hollandse Hoogte. In conjunction with her life as a photographer, she is a teacher at the Photo Academy (Fotoacademie).
HUMAN ANGELS Marie Cécile Thijs depicts angels as man's impromptu companions. In her work, angels are a timeless metaphor representing hope and autonomy. She intermingles the surreal world of angels with today's world to create a new reality. She also shows angels in more of a traditional portrait setting, partly inspired by classical painting and sculpture. The exhibition Human Angels started in 2005 in the Melkweg Gallery Amsterdam, and is since then regularly exhibited. Photos from this exhibit have been acquired by several art collectors and companies, and shown at the renowned fine art fair 'PAN Amsterdam' in 2009.' Photos titled ‘Angel Boy with Dog’ and ‘Angel Girl’ were recently nominated in the Masters Cup of the International Color Awards 2009 (categories: Portrait Professional & Fine Art Professional).
LEGAL PRACTITIONERS Marie Cecile Thijs has a predilection for making portraits of legal practitioners, as she worked as a lawyer at the tribunal in the past. In 2008, the Curator at the Photo Museum Antwerp in Belgium selected her series of portraits for the international group exhibition ‘Room for Justice’, for the benefit of the Organisation for Human Rights, named Advocats Sans Frontieres.
WHITE COLLAR 'White Collar' is the newest autonomous photo project of Marie Cecile Thijs, which she started in 2010. The models are wearing a 17th-century antique ruff collar that belongs to the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Because this collar is so delicate and rare, it was photographed by Marie Cecile Thijs separately in the Rijksmuseum and placed afterwards on her models by way of digital imaging. Photo ‘Girl with White Collar at Table’ has been selected by the Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago: 111 pieces were chosen out of 13,692 entries (from 67 countries) for the international exhibition of photographic art in San Diego, named the Art of Photography Show 2010.
