Hans Ittmann began to paint next to his study for notary in Amsterdam. He was so enthusiastic that he gave up his study in 1941 so he could completely devote himself to painting. In 1946 he went to Paris, where he studied at the Ecole of the Beaux-Physician and worked a year in the studio of the sculptor Ossip Zadkine. He painted in that period half-abstract figures. After he returned to the Netherlands five years later he connected to the abstract working artists of Creation and in 1954 he was co-founder of League New Images.
