A chrysanthemum-petal-shaped box and cover with flat base and convex cover. On the cover a lightly impressed decoration of leaves. Except for the base and around the rims, the box is covered with a greenish/bluish transparent glaze.
Small boxes, such as this example, were produced by various kilns throughout China since at least the Tang dynasty. Used to hold a variety of cosmetic materials such as lotions, powders, incense and medicines, each kiln produced a local variant, with differing shapes, sizes, glazes and decorations.
