A Famille Verte Brush Pot
China, Kangxi Period (1662 – 1722)
Height: 12.2 cm
Diameter: 10.5 cm
Produced for the Chinese scholar to hold calligraphy brushes, this brush pot or bitong, is painted in the typical famille verte palette for the Chinese market. Scholars were particularly fond of scenes of nature, such as can be seen here with a bird amidst blossoming flowers, as it gave scholars inspiration and tranquillity, whilst painting.
Therefore, many of the scholars items produced have a strong connection to natural environments, i.e. mountains, streams and animals or reflect everyday scenes of beauty.
