Famille Verte Teapot
China, Kangxi period (1662 – 1722), Ca. 1700
Height: 19 cm
A famille verte teapot and cover, decorated with panels of flowers, with an upright bamboo handle.
The handle simulates the traditional way of wrapping the handle of tea- and winepots with bamboo. This prevents the handle from getting to warm by the liquid held in the vessel and simultaneously provides a better grip.
Bamboo, the emblem of longevity and the Confucian symbol of eternal friendship, is often seen together with pine and the plum tree, together forming the “Three Friends of Winter”.
