A Ming Dynasty Pear Shaped Bottle
China, Chongzhen period (1628 - 1644)
Height: 24.2 cm
The pear shaped body of this vase is decorated in a reserved pattern with three herrings against sprays of lotus plants surrounded by a background of swirling scrolls.
Bottles with a similar decoration appeared in the Wanli period (1563 – 1620) but did not have the characteristic features of the Chongzhen reign versions where the reserved patterns are outlined in a darker tone of blue, such as can be seen in the bottle shown here.
A Wanli version was exhibited in Hong Kong in 1975. A similar version of the Chongzhen period is in the Mr. and Mrs. Amos Worthington Collection.
