A Pair of Famille Verte Hexagonal Vases
China, Kangxi period (1662 – 1722)
Height: 29.5 cm

Each vase is elaborately decorated with alternating panels of “Long Elizas”, antiquities and floral scenes issuing from a rockwork. Flowering peonies have been applied to the flaring mouths.

Sharp edged modelled porcelains were not traditionally produced in China. The Japanese potters in Arita, however, were masters at producing multisided pieces with sharp, strong edges. According to Jörg, it is likely that the porcelain factories in Jingdezhen took over such fashionable features in order to compete and attract foreign clients who admired Japanese wares.

A pair of hexagonal vases with the same decoration, but with round mouths, surmounted by European brass tops are in Anastacio Goncalves Museum, Lisbon.
