'Lokapala'.

This brightly coloured Tang pottery guardian 'Lokapala' is unusual. Huge quantities of pottery 'Mingqi' (burial goods) were manufactured during this period. They were either biscuit fired and then applied with unfired 'cold' pigments or they were biscuit fired and then covered with lead glazes which were fixed in a second firing. The latter style gave more permanent colours with at times a slight loss of detail the former had colours prone to get rubbed and loose some clarity. Our figure appears to have had the colours fixed at a low temperature second firing, after a white slip had been applied first. The result is a brightly coloured yet unglazed lokapala figure with the pigments permanently fixed.
