This model is derrived from the Chinese Yixing stoneware teapots that ware imported in the Dutch Republic at the end of the 17th century. These jugs of unglazed and glossy polished brown stoneware were most desirable, but rare and expensive. Therefore many Delft potters, among which Ary de Milde, specialized in imitation of this Asian product which was in great demand.
