On this 18th century majolica plaque we see "the triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne", after a painting by Annibale Carracci. 
 
His source of inspiration was the famous poem with the same title written in 1490 by the Florentine prince Lorenzo de Medici. 
 
In this poem man is urged to enjoy life, because life is short.
 
Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) was the most important and famous descendant of a family of painters in Bologna, Italy. 
 
In the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam there is a print "the triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne" by Carlo Cesio from 1656.
