A fine ormolu mantle clock after a design by Thomire of Cupid Carrying Time, France ca. 1810, signed Gaston Jolly a Paris.
This theme is constantly repeated during the Directoire & Empire period. Thomire is known to have used this model and although this clock is unsigned it does carry the hallmarks of Thomire's hand or at least his workshop. The quality of the ormolu and the way that it has been worked to give texture to the skin of the Cupid, the fine work to the wings and the burnishing indicates the hand of the best chisseleurs. The movement is of 8 day duration bell duration bell striking the hours and halves and regulated by a silk suspended pendulum.
