A superb Mandarin Cylinder Musibox with drum, bells and castanet, Switzerland ca. 1876.
This musicbox plays ten melodies, music by Verdi, Gounod, Offenbach, Von Suppé, Lecocq, Mylins and Cramer. The case is veneered with rosewood, has a walnut border and marquetry in the lid and on the front. Unique is the version with six bells, bell hammers in the form of butterflies, with castanets and drum. Two polychrome painted Chinese Mandarins play the engraved bells. A music box with beautiful sound and rich musical program which is also eye and ear caressing.
The spring-powered cylinder plays three combs. A light classical program. The 10 melodies and composers are on the original tunes called. A handle-switch controls whether a melody is repeated or whether they are played in sequence. With the spring and wind regulator, one can adjust the speed of playback. On the bedplate signed E. Karrer Hoffmann, Tufelthal, Suisse. Mechanics and wooden case are professionally restored and in fantastic condition. Three stamps are printed in the tunesheet. One refers to "International Exhibition Philadelphia - 1876 '.
